BBC on Trees and Bikes

I listened to a couple BBC Radio shows yesterday evening. I’d recommend them both:

The first was a Changing Places series, just starting up, on forest management in the UK. A bit of subtext seems to be: how cheap imported lumber (from here?) has allowed UK foresters to de-emphasize timber production in favor of habitat restoration. They now look at a 50:50 split in priorities. That said, they see an end to cheap lumber in the future (when we run out?) and see their timber plantings as important in that future.

The second was an episode from an earlier Changing Places series, on the National Cycle Network, a web of 10,000 miles of cycle paths across Britain. An interesting tidbit here (if I heard it correctly) was that while Britons cycle for 2% of their journeys, Danes (in far worse weather) cycle for 20% of their journeys. Do I cycle half the time because I’m half Danish? Is there a cycling gene? Experiments to follow … (this is my attempt at BBC-style humor)

Good shows, enjoy.
