Sell In May, Go Away
That title is an ancient saying in the stock markets. I’ve read that it dates to the days of steam trains and sailing ships. When NY investors left town for the summer, they couldn’t risk new information crashing their stocks while they were out of touch. So they’d sell for the summer, and commence trading when they returned in the fall.
I love that old rules like this could still be true, and it bears on our current question: Will this rally stick?
Three takes:
Bespoke Investment: Sell In May, Go Away?
Barry Ritholtz: Sell in May and go away: fact or fallacy?
John Mauldin: Sell in May and Go Away
I’m leaning with John Mauldin.
